Description:
“Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Geogaphica Ac Hydrographica Tabula”, by Henricus Hondius, circa 1630. Copper engraved map published in Amsterdam, circa 1630. Another beautiful example of ornate Dutch map making. This double hemisphere map was Hondius’ first “new” world map in 35 years, having used the Mercator plate without change from about 1595. Bordering the two hemispheres are representations of the four elements Air, Fire, Earth and Water. In the top corners are portraits of Julius Caesar and Claudius Ptolemy and in the lower corners are portraits of Henricus’ father Jodocus Hondius and Gerals Mercator. This is one of the first maps to erroneously show California as an island. Within the next half century virtually all European cartographers would follow this lead.
